Antiretroviral (ARV) drug resistance is an importantcause of treatment failure, and multiplestudies have shown that such testing can resultin improved virologic outcome in drug-experiencedpatients. It is noteworthy, in this regard, that four separate guideline documents, all publishedor posted on websites since June 2003,address the use of ARV drug resistance testingin clinical practice. These documents, includingthree from US governmental agencies and onefrom the International AIDS Society-USA (IASUSA),are cited in the Guidelines Section of thisissue of AIDS Reviews.
