Abstract
The AIDS pandemic which is believed to haveoriginated from simian retroviruses is often cited toillustrate the direct public health consequences ofcross-species transmission of animal retroviruses tohumans. The HIV pandemic has also heightenedconcerns regarding iatrogenic transmission of otheranimal retroviruses to humans by xenotransplantation,the grafting of living animal tissues or cells inhumans.
