The AIDS pandemic which is believed to haveoriginated from simian retroviruses is often cited toillustrate the direct public health consequences ofcross-species transmission of animal retroviruses tohumans. The HIV pandemic has also heightenedconcerns regarding iatrogenic transmission of otheranimal retroviruses to humans by xenotransplantation, the grafting of living animal tissues or cells inhumans.
