Evidence of moderate leves of phenotypic resistanceto NNRTIs was recognized in two previoussurveys conducted in the United States (Boden etal. JAMA 1999; 282: 1135-41; Little et al. JAMA1999; 282: 1142-9). Since infection acquired throughtransmission of NNRTI-mutant viruses was unlikelyin most of these subjects, Leigh Brown and colleaguesinvestigated whether the presence of polymorphismsat the pol gene could explain this finding.
