According to the Joint United Nations Programmeon HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), 22 million peoplehave already died from HIV-related diseasessince the beginning of the AIDS epidemic. Eventhough highly active antiretroviral therapy hasbecome available, 16,000 new HIV infectionsoccur daily mostly in the countries of sub-SaharanAfrica. The rapid spread of the HIV epidemicunderlines the urgent need for an effective HIVvaccine.
