Efforts to produce an HIV vaccine are stillexperiencing major problems related to thetremendous variability of HIV and the ability of thevirus to hide inside immune cells. Classicalapproaches have failed, because the antigensused in candidate vaccines so far either do notcross-neutralize most circulating HIV strains, ordo not elicit the proper immune response thatprotects against established HIV infection.
