Recent studies demonstrate that vaccinations using DNA priming and recombinant pox virus booster immunizations raise much higher levels of T cell responses than either of these regimens alone. Here we discuss the role of T cells in protection against immunodeficiency viruses, the results of early preclinical trials using DNA priming and pox virus booster immunizations for AIDS vaccines, and the overall promise of heterologous priming and boosting regimens for T cell vaccines.
