The XIII International Conference on AIDS tookplace in Durban during the past July. Among others, two major issues in therapeutics were widely discussed. One was the most appropriate strategy for reducing the rate of perinatal transmission ofHIV. Another referred to intermittent treatment interruptions. As expected, considerable interesta rose when results of trials designed to prevent thevertical transmission of HIV were presented. InSouth Africa nearly one third of pregnant womenare HIV-positive.
