Sequence variation in HIV-1 reverse transcriptase(RT) and protease, the targets of antiretroviraldrugs, can represent either naturally occurringpolymorphims associated with different subtypesor viral groups, or genetic changes selected underantiretroviral drug pressure. The variability inthe origin of mutations in HIV RT and proteasesequences, and the lack of annotation in publicdatabases has complicated the tasks of researchersaiming at analyzing the role of differentmutations in the acquisition of drug resistance toRT and protease inhibitors.
