British HIV Guidelines for the Management of Hepatitis B and C in HIV-Coinfected Patients

Chronic infection with the hepatitis B virus (HBV), but especiallywith the hepatitis C virus (HCV), has acquired greatimportance over the last few years in the setting of HIV infection.Given the increased liver-related morbidity and mortalityin this population, efforts are currently being made to treat,and more ambitiously, to cure these coinfections, in order tohalt the progression to end-stage liver disease. However, themanagement of HBV and HCV coinfections in HIV-infectedpatients is often challenging. Numerous questions such as,“What is the assessment needed?â€?, “Who needs to be treated?â€?,“When?â€? and “How?â€? are still in the air, and there areno definitive answers. With the purpose of guiding HIV careproviders in the management of coinfected patients, expertshave gathered on several occasions and then released theirrecommendations.
