Nearly 60 million people have been infected with HIV sincethe beginning of the pandemic, and of these one third havealready died. For those infected more recently, however, thelife expectancy has improved dramatically due to the favorableimpact of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART).Unfortunately, antiretrovirals are moving only slowly into thedeveloping world, where most persons are infected andwhere their benefit will have the largest impact.
