The advent of potent antiretroviral therapy for managing HIV infection in the mid-1990s resulted in an unprecedented increase in survival of HIV-infected persons. The current therapeutic arsenal against HIV is well stocked and extremely effective, allowing full viral load suppression in most HIV carriers with access to treatment. However, these drugs are unable to eradicate HIV infection and so other innovative approaches, including a few based on gene therapy, are currently being tested with this aim. Particular enthusiasm for this matter was raised at the last CROI held in Boston last February, 2011.
