The most recent estimates indicate that by the end of 2010 there were 34 million people living with HIV infection, 70% of them in sub-Saharan Africa. In parallel, 1.1 million HIV-infected patients develop tuberculosis (TB) every year, which is the main cause of death in 24% of HIV individuals in Africa. Last June, the World Health Organization (WHO) issued an update on âAntiretroviral Treatment as Prevention of HIV and TBâ? (Available at http://www.who.int/hiv/pub/mtct/programmatic_update_tasp/en/index.html).
