Chemoprophylaxis to prevent initial episodesof certain opportunistic infections (primary prophylaxis)and subsequent episodes (secondaryprophylaxis) were widely used before highly activeantiretroviral therapies became available in1996. The success of the new therapies in reducingthe incidence of AIDS-related opportunisticdiseases has led to a reassessment of the roleof prophylaxis against these infections in patientswho have durable antiviral responses.
