HIV-1 nef is a regulatory protein that is only 27kDa in size, yet despite it is relatively small it hasbeen shown to have several distinct biological activities.HIV-1 nef down regulates cell surface expressionof the CD4 receptor. This effect has beenshown to enhance the spread of HIV-1 by preventingthe budding HIV-1 virions to bind to previouslyinfected cells. Nef can also down regulate the cellsurface expression of MHC class I molecules whichcould interfere with antigen presentation by HIV-1infected cells.
