The use of highly active antiretroviral therapy(HAART) has dramatically changed the clinicaland virologic course of HIV-1 infection in a substantialproportion of infected individuals. HAARTeffectively controls the replication of HIV-1, and inmany patients the virus becomes undetectablein plasma for extended periods of time.
