Several reports in the literature have highlightedthe impact of lipid disorders on the outcomeof subjects on antiretroviral therapy. In arecent study, investigators from Wisconsin (Stein,et al. Circulation 2001;104:257-62) demonstratedthat the use of protease inhibitor (PI)-containingregimens is associated with atherogenic lipoproteinchanges and endothelial dysfunction, both ofwhich predispose to atherosclerosis and furthercardiovascular risk. In a cross-sectional study theauthors examined a total of 37 adults with HIVinfection who were receiving antiretroviral therapy.
