The US Department of Health and HumanServices (DHHS) released on July 14th 2003new revised guidelines for the use of antiretroviralagents (http://www.aidsinfo.nih.gov). Specialconsiderations in regimen selection weremade for women of reproductive age. When initiating antiretroviral therapy, the indicationsfor beginning therapy, and the goals of treatment,are the same as for other adults. For thewoman who is pregnant, an additional goal oftherapy is prevention of mother-to-child transmission(MTCT).
