Abstract

The need to develop additional HIV preventiontools, under the control of women, is urgent1. Thesearch for an effective vaginal microbicide startedin the early 1990s2 and has been accelerated inrecent years3. On January 31, 2007, CONRAD announcedthe discontinuation of their Cellulose Sulphate(CS) microbicide phase III effectiveness trialbecause “preliminary data indicated that cellulosesulphate could lead to an increased risk in HIV infectionâ€?.
