The concept of simplification emerged as a needfor adherent, HIV-infected patients receiving successful, complex or inconvenient antiretroviral regimensand it has now been incorporated into theupdated recommendations for the use of antiretroviraltherapy. The NEFA (Nevirapine, Efavirenz and Abacavir) Study was a multicenter, randomized, controlled, open-label clinical trial initially designedfor one year of follow-up (Martinez, et al. N Engl JMed 2003;349:1036-46).
