From its initial outbreak in Wuhan, China, in December 2019, coronavirus disease (COVID-19), which is caused by a novel coronavirus known as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2)1, evolved from a �public health emergency of international concern� to a World Health Organization (WHO) declared pandemic by March 2019, with then more than 118,000 confirmed cases in 114 countries2.
