Nevirapine Clearly Offers Benefits Regarding Lipid Status

New HIV therapies have significantly increasedsurvival, but are often associated with multiple metabolicabnormalities, most of them related to theprotease inhibitors (PIs). In a recent article, Fisac, etal. (J Clin Endocrinol Metabolism 2003;88:5186-92)goes deeper in this matter. In order to elucidate andcompare morphological and metabolic alterations inHIV-infected drug-naive patients receiving two nucleosidesplus nelfinavir or nevirapine, they examineda subset of patients enrolled in the COMBINEtrial (Podzamczer, et al. Antiviral Ther 2002;7:81-90).
