Abstract
As an integral part of the HIV life cycle, recombinationhas significantly shaped HIV diversity. It has,however, been a longstanding scientific questionwhether recombination exists because it is itself beneficialor as the result of some extrinsic process. Ina recent issue of Science, Bonhoeffer, et al. investigatedwhether negative epistasis could lead tothe emergence of recombination for HIV (Science2004;304:1547-50)
