Insulin resistance (IR) and hyperglycemia are frequentmetabolic alterations in patients on HAART,and may be due to both direct and indirect pathogenicmechanisms induced by antiretrovirals. Althoughan increase in glycemia has been describedassociated with many different antiretroviral regimens,protease inhibitors (PI) have been mostlylinked to it. Up to now, little information has beenavailable regarding combinations not including PI,such as non-nucleoside containing regimens.
