Virus assembly is an event in the viral life cyclethat so far has been somewhat neglected inantiviral drug design, in part because it is not fullyunderstood, and suitable assays for drugscreening are not available. It was known beforethat an ATP-dependent factor was required forHIV capsid formation (Lingappa, et al. J Cell Biol1997;136:567-81). Now Zimmerman, et al.(Nature, 2002;415:88-92) have identified the proteininvolved, HP68, also known as RNase Linhibitor.
