In February, a new version of the US DHHSGuidelines for the use of antiretroviral agents inadults was released. Little changes were introducedregarding the use of viral load and CD4+cell counts for the monitoring of HAART. Inpatients under antiretroviral therapy, optimal virussuppression should be considered only whenviral load is below 50 HIV-RNA copies/ml, and thedefinition of virological success should require atleast six months on therapy. With respect to criteriafor initiating HAART in asymptomatic individuals,a trend towards a more conservativeapproach is given.
