At the XI International HIV Drug ResistanceWorkshop held in Seville last July, investigatorsfrom Merck reported the first steps towardsthe clinical use of HIV integrase inhibitors(Hazuda, et al. & Young, et al. AntiviralTher 2002;7:3 and 17). Integrase is a virallyencoded enzyme that inserts (integrates) thedouble-stranded DNA product of reverse transcriptioninto the DNA of the host cell chromosome.
