Prophylaxis with highly active antiretroviral therapy(HAART) is indicated in the event of healthcare-personnelexposure to blood from HIV-infected patients. However, the assessment and management of incidentswith potential for HIV transmission outside thisclinical setting is not so well standardized. Expertsfrom 14 European countries have recently releasedguidelines on how to proceed in case of non-occupationalHIV post-exposure prophylaxis (NONOPEP)(Almeda, et al. Eurosurveillance 2004;9:35-40).
