Whereas advances in antiretroviral therapy and its widespread use are providing huge benefits in terms of preventing new HIV transmissions to uninfected individuals as well as halting disease progression in patients, the elimination of HIV from carriers remains elusive and requires new approaches. Current estimates of 37 million people living with HIV worldwide represent an important stimulus for pursuing new strategies for HIV cure.
